Exploring Mars is an expensive adventure

As you may have heard in the news last week, NASA's Perseverance safely landed on Mars, inside the Jerezo Crater, which we think used to be a massive lake billions of years ago. The vehicle will measure and observe all it can to help us try to determine if there once was life on the red planet. However, these long-distance experiments are expensive, as you can see on the chart below. Viking 1&2 were the most expensive at $7.1 billion, while NASA estimate spending of around $3 billion for Perseverance.
