How economic downturns affect the transportation industry

Less travel, less fuel. Petroleum and coal products went down most roughly during the last recession in 2008, but also during covid-19. Operating revenues for petroleum and coal products were down from $247.4Bn Q3 2019 to $163.1Bn Q3 2020 see below. Income after income taxes in Q3 2019 was $6.9Bn and in Q3 2020, -$3.5Bn.
