European carbon prices have been breaking records above €65 a tonne since mid-November, after world leaders signed off on a new climate change agreement at the COP26 climate talks in Glasgow
EU emission prices have more than doubled since the beginning of the year, as stimulus plans and investments in decarbonization after the pandemic bolstered carbon bulls. In July, the European Union proposed a new plan to tackle climate change that includes a carbon tariff on imports from countries that aren’t taking similar steps to slash their own planet-warming greenhouse gas emission. More recently, historically high elevated gas prices due to tight supplies have improved the profitability of burning more coal, rising demand for carbon permits.
